These practices aren’t unlike producing paper, and the final result is a dried, paper-thin sheet of nori about 8 inches by 7 inches. Similar to fine wine, the production of nori can be adjusted to produce a wide range of grades of different quality and expense. The least expensive varieties, generally produced in Chinese coastal waters, can go for as little as six American cents per sheet. On the opposite end of that scale, nori available only in Japan can go for as much as fifty US dollars per sheet.
A sheet or nori is then generally used to make a single roll of makizushi by basically rolling up the ingredients inside of it to produce a tube-like item, which is then sliced several times to make the common western image of sushi. There are actually various types of sushi, each differentiated by the amount and types of ingredients contained in the roll. Nori is also utilized in forms of sushi which are not rolled in the common cylindrical manner, for example Temaki which is a cone shaped configuration of nori that is literally stuffed full of its ingredients, looking something like an ice cream cone.

At Fort Benning, every recruit training company’s armory held a lot more than just firearms. In addition to the gun safes housing serialized M-16A2 rifles, our bayonets had been stored there, too. Not like with Basic Rifle Marksmanship (BRM), we were only instructed in the use of the “cold blue steel” a couple of times. Literally. We practiced a variety of fighting moves with it, and also did the traditional dummy-stabbing you see in the movies. It was fun, and it made us feel like warriors, not just soldiers.
However guns were what actually interested us. Some gripe about the endless marching, and others the endless pushups, but no one would ever mind shooting, shooting, and more shooting. We didn’t actually realize there was an armory on the premises, and in this regard its gun safes seem redundant, seeing how everything’s behind a dead-bolted door and there are no munitions around, anyway.
Sure there was a small nametag of a sign that said “armory” but likely no recruit noticed it, seeing how the floor plan was such that our daily activities didn’t take us anywhere near the door it graced. Until BRM, that is. Really, it was a little before BRM that people found out about the armory because we had been given dummy rifles for Rifle Drill and Ceremony, or Rifle D&C, from it. But BRM was when we got our hands on the real deal.
They had been taken out of their gun safes and piled right by the armorer for rapid distribution. Every man waited in line, then promptly called out his roster number and received his rifle.
