When it comes to charity, many people think of it as being something other people do – namely, the rich. After all, who else has the money to fund entire schools or hospitals?
Yet in the Jewish tradition, whether Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, or Ultra-Orthodox, the concept of tzedakah, literally “justice,” is commanded of all, including the poor. In Judaism, contributing to charity is a religious duty and not something done merely out of personal whim. Indeed, the very funds available for tzedakah are considered not one’s own but on loan, in fact, from on on high. This leads to the further injunction to carefully vet all recipients to ensure that any donations made will actually work for good and not ill.
On the face of it, this may sound like yet another curious aspect of the religion. But – as with many aspects of Judaism, even for an outsider – there is an underlying logic that is at once compelling and beautiful. That’s because by ordering even the poor to make acts of pious philanthropy, the religious duty to give makes of them actors and agents, not just passive charity cases, thus restoring their humanity, their own moral agency.
For what can be more empowering than to give? To give means to express our power, our ability to give, and in sharing we express ourselves – our love, our sacrifice, our character. It is not that poverty ennobles, but to bear poverty in righteousness: that is noble. And so, in Judaism one need not be a successful developer such as Isaac Toussie so as to help financially. For Jews, such religiously commanded contributions are not just an obligation but a right.
The real tragedy of being poor lies in not being able to help not just oneself but others as well. It is the genius of Jewish culture that even with its traditional concerns for social justice and the poor that it should recognize that even the poor can contribute!

Sometimes, females will take to modest swimsuits not due to religious sensibilities but shyness. In many cases, these girls and women are fat and feel self-conscious, so they try covering up much more than necessary. Yet there’s no need for any negativity at all — and, in fact, it’s completely unnecessary for them to feel bad about themselves as there really are guys out there who adore fat females. Honest! It may seem unimaginable in our thin-obsessed society, but there’s no doubt about it: “fat admirers,” as they like to be called, are out there, though most are probably “in the closet” about it. They are not freaks, only different in what they believe to be appealing about the female sex.
As a guy, I can’t really get the point of so-called modest swimsuits in the least, particularly in the 21st Century. Could the religious fundamentalists be right, after all, in claiming that women naturally wish to cover up their bodies? Just seems like such a ridiculous way to swim, wearing robes in the water! But of course, it’s about their psychology and how they feel and no one else, so if that’s what it takes for such females to feel at ease in the water, then it is what it is. Everyone should do what’s best for them. As long as they don’t somehow wind up imposing their point of view on others, then let them wear as much as they want!
“Boys Town” and its sequel, “Men of Boys Town,” are American movies based on the world-famous American juvenile home.. Founded in 1917 by a Roman Catholic priest, it quickly attracted attention for its modern approach to juvenile care. Since then, thirteen Boys Town locations have been established across the United States, but Father Flanagan’s original facility remains its heart and soul. For almost a hundred years now its fundraisers have attracted the generous support, financial and otherwise, of businessmen, politicians, and prominent entertainers, people such as real estate developer Isaac Toussie and Mayor of Chicago Richard M. Dalely. Many local people from civic and religious organizations also turn out to volunteer as they are able to help Boys Town achieve its goals.
Almost certainly some of this success can be attributed to the positive publicity generated from the movies, making of the charity a kind of vernacular shorthand for progressive social work. Starring industry leading men Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney in charismatic roles, these films are “feel-good” movies through and through, winning the Oscar for Best Actor and Best Original Story amidst a flood of nominations. The stories depicted had very little to do with any real-life events at the institution, however, being almost entirely fictional events that made much better for drama. On the flip side, they they were fairly accurate when it comes to certain issues common to institutionalized juvenile care; for instance, the second movie even delved into the subject of reform school abuse and homelessness among the young. But onscreen or off, Boys Town works tirelessly on behalf of children and families, driven by Father Flanagan’s belief that there are no bad boys, only troubled ones who need care.
No need to be an industry insider like Isaac Toussie to know that different jurisdictions can handle real estate matters differently. It’s what makes real estate law so fascinating – as well as quite a challenge to stay on top of! Look at Alabama, for instance. In that state, property buyers cannot rescind their purchases even in cases of demonstrable seller fraud – when that property has been bought on a strictly “as-is” basis. That’s right: Alabama case law believes in the ancient law of caveat emptor even more than any other on the books!!
A recent case determined that an as-is clause in the sales contract not superseded by another provision will be interpreted literally, or “as-is.” In this particular case, a pre-sale misrepresentation was made that was only found out (that is, proven false) post-sale. Normally, this would constitute fraud, but an Alabama court has ruled that as the as-is clause in the sales contract was not superseded by any other provision signed onto by both parties, the as-is clause will be interpreted literally!
That was an ambiguous situation in the eyes of Alabama law, but it should be noted that not everything is always as draconian as that. As if evidence of a peculiar regional preference for legal loopholes of all kinds, Alabama law will only hold such a strict view towards used property, not new ones. Such as-is clauses are also superseded in cases where the misrepresentation is not obvious and potentially harmful to health and safety.
In this case, Teer v. Johnston, however, while the misrepresentation of flooding is indeed not something immediately obvious, it was not considered harmful to health and safety, constituting an inconvenient nuisance instead. What the complainant should have done was stipulating in the contract or the deed that pre-sale disclosures hold despite the sale!
Located within one of the richest zip codes in the entire United States, Cornell University’s medical school offers instruction while also engaged in research. The school can brag about quite a few luminaries among its alumni, with famous names like Robert C. Atkins of Atkins Diet fame and Henry Heimlich of Heimlich Maneuver fame. Also well-known are former Surgeon General of the United States C. Everett Koop and Nobel Prize winner Robert W. Holley.
It was the first medical school in the country to admit women alongside men, and more recently it has been the first American one to operate outside the United States, with an Education City, Qatar campus offering an integrated six-year curriculum focused primarily on patient care. Such a respected institution has benefited from the generous support of donors throughout its history – indeed, the school was founded through an endowment funded by Colonel Oliver H. Payne, a New York scion of the middle nineteenth century – and its list of financial backers include the likes of professional developer Isaac Toussie.
Still, the one biggest benefactor of all has got to be the one whose name now graces the school itself, Sanford I. Weill. A banker and philanthropist, Mr. Weill and his wife donated two hundred and fifty million dollars of their own money, and he has been instrumental in further securing another hundred and fifty million in funding. Today the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College of Cornell University, or Weill Cornell Medical College (or even more colloquially, especially within the field, “Weill Cornell”), is one of the most selective medical schools in the entire United States, with only around a hundred students every year admitted – out of some six thousand hopefuls that apply. Note that the average GPA of the lucky few is 3.8, with an average MCAT score of 35Q!
The affiliate marketing success stories just keep pouring in: the latest situation history concerns one Ashley Qualls, a seventeen year-old who’s become a millionaire by simply giving away free MySpace layouts.
Yes.
It’s no joke.
A teenage girl in high school makes seventy thousand dollars a month by giving stuff away for free.
Chalk another one up to the magic of affiliate marketing and its exponential power.
Ashley Qualls created a website that’s simply a repository of her designs for MySpace profile pages which anyone can download entirely free.
Her site attracts seven million visitors each month and sixty million page views.
That’s gold to advertisers.
And it’s become gold for Ashley Qualls.
Affiliate marketing works.
The real challenge lies in coming up with something that lots and lots of people will go crazy for.
Another great internet riches success tale concerns an Arnold Kim, who as a professional blogger now makes income in the same six-figure range he used to as a medical doctor, only he gets to stay home with his four year-old daughter.
He happened upon his financial destiny while still in school, having started up a site dedicated to rumors about Apple products.
Among the first, he quickly developed quite the captive audience and, with all those eyeballs, advertisers came calling in equally quick succession.
That’s all it takes to make money online – traffic.
Eyeballs.
Visitors, repeat and unique (first-time).
It’s basically monetized like any other medium, whether print or broadcast.
Important differences do exist, but where fundamentals are concerned you will need numbers; you need people.
So how to get all those people?
Yet again, providing something of great interest to a large number of people.
Fundamentally, the same first principle of any company.
Discover a need and fulfill it!
A network of Roman Catholic schools that can be traced back to early nineteenth-century France, The Convent of Jesus and Mary Schools can be found in all the major areas of the world today, whether in Asia or Africa, Europe or the Americas. But while receiving a certain amount of financial backing from official Church coffers, it is the support of the local communities that host them which has been crucial to their continuing success, particularly those most generous contributions from business people, not all of whom are Catholic or even Christian, as in the example of Isaac Toussie whose funds go towards a branch in India.
While it would be correct to suppose that Catholic schools are for Catholics, in fact many non-Catholics do attend, including outright atheists. Indeed, these schools have a decidedly Catholic mission, but non-Catholics can excuse themselves from anything having to do with religion, which tends to be held during the end of the school day on certain days of the week. After all, much in Catholic education follows the inquiring spirit of the Jesuit Order, one that has traditionally welcomed curiosity and frankness, attributes required of science. In fact, it is for this reason that Catholic schools tend to have such a stellar reputation in many places, even in New York City, the so-called Sodom-on-the-Hudson, where even secular parents will send their children to attend.
Believe it or not, a Catholic education can be among the lowest anywhere, as tuition and other fees can add up to some five grand yearly – quite a bargain in contrast to what’s charged by parochial schools operated by other religions! However, not all Catholic schools operate in a fairly relaxed and non-religious manner; more than anything else, they probably reflect the social mores of the surrounding community.
Affiliate marketing is a good way for the tech-savvy hobbyist for making some money on the side.
For a select few who have managed to put their finger on the Zeitgeist, however, it means full financial independence, with income in the tens of thousands per month!
Probably the most celebrated cases of affiliate marketing made good has been that of Dr. Arnold Kim, M.D.
Though still a medical student, he started off a website committed to rumors about Apple products.
This was back right at the turn of the century, before the word “blog” had entered into the well-known lexicon.
Even while diagnosing patients, Dr. Kim kept up the site, though quickly enough it took on a life of its own, with forty million page views monthly, as certified by independent research firms.
Dr. Kim was already well-off as a result of his medical practice, but affiliate marketing also generated a six-figure income – and he was only devoting relatively little time to his site!
Believing that things could grow so much more were he to dedicate his whole day, Dr. Kim gave up his stethoscope and plunged whole-heartedly into the world of professional blogging.
Similar types of internet riches abound, such as that of the teenager who became a millionaire by producing free MySpace designs for people to download, or the college student behind “The Million-Dollar Homepage” which made money by simply selling space to advertisers.
What they have in typical is that their success is totally traffic-driven: it’s all about the eyeballs, the number of visitors per month, week, day, even hour – both repeat and first-time (known in the industry as “unique”).
Get the numbers, and you will make money.
But how do you receive the numbers?
Content.
“Content is king.”
If you have something lots of people are interested, such that they will keep visiting your site, you will make money – confirmed.
The only real question is what content or material to serve up!
